Cabbages and Condoms? Ahem…pardon? This is a name of a restaurant? Yep that’s correct, this quirky restaurant in Bangkok’s nightlife district, Sukhumvit, whose motto is “our food won’t make you pregnant” is always highly rated by travellers to this city. Well lets give it a go I thought, i’m very intrigued!
Well i’m glad we did – this safe sex themed restaurant not only has fantastic food, but part of the profits got to charity – which is something I highly approve of! Money from your meal is used to support development programmes initiated by the Population and Community Development Association (PDA).
The restaurant is located a few minutes walk away from the busy Sukhumvit road ( a big lightbox sign will guide your way). After walking down a dimly lit street, you will find a leafy path that leads you to the entrance. Life size mannequins dressed head to toe in colourful condom costumes, walls decorated with condoms from all over the world. and all sorts of other condom related paraphernalia awaits you. Post a letter home to your folks in the giant condom post box (or maybe not!) or poke your head through a cardboard image of a condom for a funny photo. It is just so bizarre!
When you have finally finished taking tonnes of photos of all this crazy stuff – it’s time to eat (which is why you came here right?). The restaurant is set in a large courtyard dining area, with both outside and inside seating available. The decoration of the outdoor part of the restaurant is just so pretty – hundreds of twinkly fairy lights and cute lamp shades hang from the trees creating a lovely ambiance. Small waterfalls bubble away amongst the tables, musicians play traditional Thai instruments on the tiny stage and the overhead fans spray a fine mist all over you to keep you cool in the humid thai climate.
The food is not the cheapest in the city, but still comparatively cheap for visitors – appetisers being around £3, and mains meals around £5. The menu is large and extensive so even the fussiest of eaters will find something to eat here. We enjoyed the Mieng Khum – an appetiser of dried shrimp, peanuts, ginger, deep-fried coconut, chilli, shallots all wrapped in wild betel leaves for 150 baht (£3) and a good old classic thai green curry for 270 baht (£5.50).
When the bill arrives, do not expect the usual complimentary mints – instead you’ll receive a male and female condom! Don’t forget to browse some of the the handicraft shops on your way out for condom themed souvenirs.
This was a fun night out, so make sure you add this restaurant to your Bangkok trip itinerary. You also have the rooftop bars and night markets nearby in Sukhumvit to explore after you’ve finished eating too.
Cabbages and Condoms are a chain restaurant and located in several parts of Thailand. They also now have two restaurants based in the UK – Bicester and Cheltenham (I might have to head to these places one weekend!).
