Chiang Mai has a myriad of markets to explore. You’ll have most likely heard of the famous Saturday night and Sunday night walking markets but possibly not the Friday night walking market in Chiang Mai.
The Chiang Mai Friday night market is less well known and seems to have several names attached to it including walking street Kad Kongkao or the Lamchang Community night market.
It is held every Friday night in Chiang Mai old town between 4pm and 10pm.
New for 2023 – a new food night market called Lanna Square Night Market has also opened immediately next door to the Friday Night Walking Market in Chiang Mai – details below.

Located along a small, arty alleyway called Ratvithi Road Lane 1, the Friday Night Walking Market in Chiang Mai has approx 40 stalls, predominantly selling crafts and souvenirs, with a small smattering of food stalls.
Popping up along a road that also has many permanent bars and restaurants, the setting is a little more cosy than most street walking markets in Chiang Mai, with the street art along the road a delightful backdrop.

Aimed at tourists, the Friday night Kad Kongkao Market takes around 5 mins to walk along its entire length if you don’t stop to browse or buy.
Most of the stalls were selling clothing and jewellery. What was nice was that most of the stallholders seemed to be local students or youngsters selling their own brands of fashion which was refreshing to see.
Along the alleyway, there were also some charming features like a permanent wish wall where you could add your own card and various fairy lights.
There was also a small family-run massage section plus towards the Moon Muang Road Lane 6 end of the market, and numerous bars with terraces overlooking the market (plus a tattoo parlour if you are feeling brave / high).

Whilst not epic in scale, the Friday night walking market is a cute and cosy addition to the Chiang Mai market scene, plus it is located near to lots of buzzing bars and restaurants (there is literally a complex of 8 or 9 bars and nightclubs practically next door including Zoe in Yellow and Bar 48).
So it would be easy to make a night of it if you are in area (although best to go shopping before you go the bars so you don’t blow your budget!)
Chiang Mai Friday Night Market location
The Friday night walking market (Kad Kongkao) address is Ratvithi Road Lane 1 Tambon Si Phum, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50200 – or alternatively, if you know your Chiang Mai bars and restaurants, the entrance is next to the UN Irish Pub off Ratchawithi Road or near the Waffle House on Moon Muang Road Lane 6.

Opened at the start of 2023, Lanna Square Chiang Mai is currently the newest night market in Chiang Mai which has opened right next door to Kad Kongkao Friday night walking market.
Handily located right next to one of the busiest party places in Chiang Mai, immediately behind the famous Zoe in Yellow Bar, Lanna Square Night Market is actually one of the more laid back and mellow night markets (which is surprising, given it is next to so many clubs and pubs).
Better still, you can enter it straight from the same alley the Friday Night Walking Market is in.
Lanna Square night market is centred around a large, brightly lit stage area with around 15 to 20 street food stalls open on any given night. There is ample seating and chairs with a plastic roof to protect diners from any rain.
There is a veritable feast of food stalls at Lanna Square Chiang Mai night market – we spotted stalls selling Thai food like khao soi noodles, sticky mango rice and rotis plus international food like gyozas, burritos, steak and falafel.
Beer is also available from the drinks bar at the rear of the food court and live music takes place on the stage most nights.
Lanna Square Night Market is open daily from around 5pm to midnight.
