Cheers to Chiang Mai rooftop bars – there are lots of things to do in Chiang Mai at night but a sunset session sipping cocktails or craft beers is one of the best.
From Korean themed bars to classic cocktail sky bars on top of hotels, there are lots of Chiang Mai rooftop bars to choose from. Nearby Nimman also has excellent rooftop bars, many with views of the Chiang Mai airport planes taking off.
We love the simplicity of HIDELAND.CNX, with its incredible views at dusk and BBQ bites or how about Chiang Mai old town’s only rooftop bar, Thapae Grill – the best way to see Chiang Mai’s Sunday night market from on high.

Best Chiang Mai Rooftop Bars
1. HIDELAND.cnx
Chiang Mai’s most popular rooftop bar, HIDELAND.cnx is a sublime spot to see in a sunset with two rooftop patios, both looking toward the mountains.
Open from 5pm to 11.30pm daily, be sure to arrive early at HIDELAND.CNX as the best tables fill up quickly. Drink prices are reasonable – a small Chang beer at HIDELAND costs around 70 THB as of February 2024.
They also have an extensive food menu (Thai and Japanese fusion) plus a small indoor seating area and DJ playing most nights. Entry is free.
If we had to name the best casual rooftop bar in Chiang Mai, HIDELAND is definitely a serious contender for best cocktails and craft beer choices.

2. Thapae Grill (formerly Improvise Rooftop Bar)
The best rooftop bar in Chiang Mai old town, Thapae Grill (formerly Improvise Bar) looks out over the old city walls and has several levels of lounges, booths and dining rooms. However, keep going up the stairs for several stories and bag a table on the top floor which is outdoors.
From Thapae Grill, you can look out towards the mountains and even see Doi Suthep hillside temple glinting in the sunset rays.
This also offers an excellent aerial view of the Sunday Night Walking Market in Chiang Mai.
Whilst a little more expensive than Hideland, Thapae Grill is a fantastic night out in Chiang Mai and the grilled skewers here are really cheap and tasty (around 20 THB to 40 THB a stick). A small Chang beer at Thapae Grill costs around 110 THB (as of 2024).
Thapae Grill rooftop bar in Chiang Mai is open daily from 11.30am to 11.30pm.
We most recently revisited in early 2024 and to note the former glass floor which used to be so fun has now been covered up and is instead used for dining.

3. Wind n Wide cnx. (temporarily closed)
Formerly known as Seoul High and since rebranded as Wind n Wide CNX, this is a small but stylish Korean rooftop bar in Chiang Mai that has great views and cheap drinks (especially during their Happy Hour promotion).
Open from 5pm until midnight, Seoul High / Wind n Wide CNX Rooftop Bar serves up Korean snacks like fried chicken and tteokbokki and has neon lights that light up at night.
Whilst not as impressive as Hideland or Thapae Grill, this secret rooftop bar in Chiang Mai is definitely worth a drink (or three).
Wind n Wide cnx is a cool little night time rooftop bar in Chiang Mai that doesn’t get crowded (we even had the whole bar to ourselves once so it is one of the best Chiang Mai rooftop bars for a chilled sunset).

4. MAI The Sky Bar – Melia Chiang Mai Rooftop Bar
‘Mai’ kind of rooftop bar – Mai The Sky Bar is Chiang Mai’s highest rooftop bar, almost 70 metres up and with fantastic views of the old town and Chiang Mai night markets.
Located on the 22nd floor of the MELIA hotel, just behind the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar and near to the Ping River, one of the best things about this Chiang Mai rooftop bar is the glass walkway that runs between the two bars.
With a sleek bar as its centrepiece and classic cocktails with tapas as a perfect pairing, this is one of the best places to see sunsets over Chiang Mai and its mountains.
MAI The SKY Bar is open daily from 4pm to midnight and also has daily specials and happy hour deals advertised in the bar. This is also an excellent place to enjoy the Chiang Mai annual Loy Krathong celebrations from afar and watch the lanterns go up.

5. Myst MAYA Rooftop bar in Nimman
Visit one of Nimman’s best rooftop bars and restaurants, Myst located on top of the Maya Lifestyle Shopping Mall (check out our guide to the best shopping malls in Chiang Mai here).
This chic cocktail bar comes alive at night with a mezzanine seating area and often has DJs and live music playing till the small hours.
Whilst prices are not cheap compared to most other bars (some of the cocktails are 800 baht), the views are spectacular and the restaurant boasts a Thai and international fusion menu.
Not the most luxurious rooftop bar in Chiang Mai, but a nice way to finish off a day of sightseeing in Nimman or retail therapy in the MAYA Lifestyle mall below.

6. Rise Rooftop Bar in Nimman
Located atop the Akyra Manor Hotel in Nimman, this rooftop bar certainly packs a punch with its views and marvellous mixology.
Specialising in classic cocktails and fine wines, this is an excellent way to see in the sunset over Nimman before heading to the Chiang Mai clubs.
Just go easy on the stronger cocktails as the focal point of the bar is a huge swimming pool (alas only for hotel guests – unless you ‘accidentally’ fall in) – ‘splash’ that cash!
Open from 3pm until 1am daily, this is the Chiang Mai rooftop bar with the longest opening hours and latest closing time – cheers!

7. Drink Rooftop Bar Chiang Mai Old Town
We are reluctantly including Drink Rooftop Bar, but only as it is quite a nice way to see the Sunday Night Walking Market in Chiang Mai – also we’ve been past it a lot during the week and it always seems empty.
The cocktails are good and better still, Drink Rooftop Bar do a “create-your-own-happy-hour” which is 50% off for the first hour you arrive at the bar. The terrace is open daily from 5pm to 11pm.
Their Thai food menu is extensive BUT it is pretty much just a second floor bar with a terrace looking out onto the street. But hey, if you get tired of Thapae Grill down the street (a much nicer rooftop bar in Chiang Mai), this might be an alternative.

8. An alternative to the real heights Chiang Mai rooftop bars – Get high in Chiang Mai
Since 2022, it has been legal to smoke grass in Thailand and dozens of dope shops have cropped up in Chiang Mai old town and in Nimman – that said, please note it is illegal to smoke (and vape) in public places.
There are also murmurings in 2024 that the new Thai Government also wants to revoke all the ‘green’ cafes that have popped up in Thailand.
With dope cafes in Chiang Mai with names like Green Smoked, The Dispensary and Aura Herb, let’s just say it is now quite easy to make best buds in Chiang Mai at night – look for the bright green neon leaf signs or just follow your nose.

9. Chiang Mai rooftop bars that have closed down (2024 update) or aren’t really rooftop bars
Please note the following Chiang Mai rooftop bars are all closed down as of May 2024 or aren’t really proper rooftop bars or pubs:
- Level 9 Rooftop Bar Chiang Mai
- Improvise Rooftop Bar – now rebranded to Thapae Grill
- See Doi Sky Terrace – this is temporarily closed as of May 2024
- Ms Behave Rooftop – located near Thapae Gate and the old town, this isn’t really a proper rooftop bar.
- Woodsbar cnx currently appears to be closed
- NORI Sky Terrace is more of a rooftop Japanese restaurant than an actual bar – good sushi though!
