Taipei in Taiwan is a city with many bizarre, gimmicky and quirky themed restaurants that are becoming increasingly popular with young locals and tourists.
You can find eateries with curious themes such as Hello Kitty, magic, jailhouses, hospitals, airplanes and ninjas – there are even themed 7-Elevens in Taipei.

If you are going to visit one themed restaurant during your visit to Taipei, make sure you do not miss the amazing Modern Toilet with branches in Ximending and Shilin.
2023 UPDATE: The Ximending branch of Modern Toilet is now permanently closed. The Shilin branch is still open though.

The Modern Toilet is a bathroom themed chain restaurant that has several branches across Taiwan and Hong Kong since opening in 2004, with more planned to open in Malaysia and China. ‘Flushed’ with success, Modern Toilet restaurants will celebrate their 20th anniversary in 2024.

Modern Toilet Decoration and Interior
During a visit to Taipei, we visited their large 3-story flagship branch, located in the fun and colourful shopping district, Ximending.
The restaurant interior is kitted out like an interior of a bathroom, with wall tiles decorated with poo shaped cartoon characters.

The acrylic toilet seats at Modern Toilet act as dining chairs, with each one uniquely decorated with designs such as flowers, glitter and sea shells.
The glass-topped sinks act as dining tables, and rolls of toilet paper are used instead of napkins.
The interior decor at Taiwan Modern Toilet is such good fun and so bright and colourful – perfect for Instagrammers!

Themed Food at Modern Toilet
The food served here is a mix of Italian and Asian cuisine – and surprisingly, it isn’t too crap (although it literally looks like it might be).
There is an English menu available at Modern Toilet Taipei that has photos of the food on (it is always great to find one of these whilst travelling in a non English speaking country!).

We ordered the clam and garlic spaghetti which was part of a set meal that also included a soup starter and an ice cream dessert.
We also ordered a noodle and meat dish which was served in a miniature toilet bowl!

The soup starter dish was served in toilet shaped mugs, whilst the soft serve chocolate flavoured ice cream dessert was presented in a squat toilet shaped plastic bowl.
And the best part? The shape of the ice cream resembled…an …erm…nicely shaped poo…hilarious!

Other items on the menu included Asian curries and hot pots, which are served in mini toilet shaped bowls. The curries are runny and brown, made to resemble….well you know what (it’s so gross!).
The bathtub shaped dishes are used for serving the seafood and pasta gratin meals in (which look a bit less offensive).

Modern Toilet Restaurant Prices
The food itself is a bit average and the prices are not as cheap as other local eateries – you are paying the extra for the experience.
We would totally would recommend a visit though for the LOLS (sorry), and for a few funny photos opportunities.
2023 update – to note the Ximending Modern toilet branch is still closed as of summer 2023 but Modern Toilet Shilin in Taipei is still open (like their toilet seats)!

Portable WIFI and Sim Cards
Having a pocket WIFI device was super handy during our trip. We pre-ordered one online with Klook and collected/dropped off the device at Taipei airport.
The rental cost was pretty cheap at only £2.85 per day, and we were both able to connect our phones to it.
Alternatively you can pick up a 4G Taiwan SIM card from the airport in Taipei – click here to pay for one in advance with Klook.
